Transform Your Trash: Shoebox Organizer

By Aditi Bhandari Turn things that would go into your trashcan into something you can use again.

One of the most frustrating things about makeup, markers, paintbrushes or any similar items is the many requirements for storage. They always have to be arranged in a certain way that doesn’t damage them, but that also doesn’t allow them to get lost within the contents of your drawers. Luckily for us though, the gift of standardized packaging has offered us an opportunity we should try to never miss; reusing and repurposing packaging and storage material.

That’s why this week’s TYT project combines two of the most widely available packaging styles; shoeboxes made of corrugated cardboard and cereal boxes made of thinner material. The best thing about this project? That it’s crafted entirely out of cardboard that can be reused or even recycled!

 You will need:

1

  • Shoe box
  • Cereal box or sheet of cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Sharpie

Step 1: Measure the length, width and depth of the shoebox and calculate the number of dividers you will need to create a grid with 1-inch square compartments.

2

Step 2: Draw the appropriate number of panels on the cereal box and cut them out.

3

Step 3: Draw a line in the center of each panel parallel to the longest side, and mark points at a distance of 1 inch.

4 5

Step 4: Draw parallel lines connecting the dots to one of the sides, then cut along those lines to make slits along one side of the panel.

6

Step 5: Assemble the panels as shown, and fit the grid into the shoebox.

Time taken: 90 minutes
