Our story

In Our Nature is a student-run publication founded at Northwestern University in November 2014. It was started by three students, who at the time were all sophomores majoring in journalism. They all had a passion for environmental issues and wanted to hone their journalistic skills by reporting on the subject that they felt most passionate about. However, despite attending an institution that boasts having one of the best journalism programs in the country, there was no outlet that focused primarily on environmental issues. In Our Nature was thus created to fill this need, both in order to give writers an outlet, as well as serving as a source for readers. In Our Nature has weekly publishing and has gained access to events such as the Chicago Green Fest, the Dalai Lama's birthday celebration, and more. The online publication aims to engage and entertain readers with all aspects of the environment, nature and sustainability. Our goal is to make environmental topics more accessible to the general public. Our coverage ranges from news about events in Evanston/Chicago and worldly news, to fun features about animals, to opinion pieces that allow contributors to voice their opinion and spark social action.
